How to purchase body armor
Threat matching is the first thing any officer should do prior to the purchase of body armor. Safariland offers an array of armor models with ballistic, spike and multi-threat capabilities – but understanding which threat you are trying to protect yourself is essential. Follow these keys steps to ensure you choose the armor model that is best for you:
STEP 1: Determine the type of threat you are trying to protect yourself against (ballistic, spike or multi-threat).
STEP 2: Determine the threat level (type) you will need.
The NIJ publishes the following threat types for body armor: Type I, II, IIA, IIIA. Each threat type is tested against certain rounds/velocities as published by the NIJ. STEP 3:Select a special threat plate that will allow
you to upgrade your level of protection.
STEP 4: After selecting the armor model that is best for you, choose from an array of concealable, external/uniform and tactical carriers that will provide maximize mobility and comfort for daily wear.
